Communication Goes Both Ways

Communication Goes Both Ways

Communication.

It's one of the most commonly used words when people talk about relationships.

"We just need to communicate better."

"They have poor communication."

"Communication is key."

But what does that actually mean?

Most people think communication means talking.

I disagree.

Talking is only half of communication. The other half is listening.

Not waiting for your turn to speak. Not interrupting.  Not thinking about your rebuttal while the other person is still talking.

Actually listening.

Trying to understand where they're coming from, even if you don't agree.

Communication exists in every relationship we have.

Marriages.

Dating relationships.

Friendships.

Families.

Coworkers.

Business partners.

Even complete strangers.

Without communication, misunderstandings become assumptions.  Assumptions become resentment.  And resentment slowly drives people apart.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing that being heard is the same as being understood.

They're not.

You can hear every word your partner says and still completely miss what they're trying to tell you.

Sometimes people aren't asking you to fix anything.  They're asking you to understand.
Sometimes they're not looking for advice.

They're looking for empathy.

Sometimes they don't need an answer. They just need to know that their thoughts and feelings matter.

Listening doesn't always mean agreeing.  You can completely disagree with someone's opinion while still respecting their right to have it.

You can acknowledge someone's feelings without believing they're entirely right or wrong.

Because feelings aren't debates to be won.  They're experiences to be understood.

Healthy communication also requires honesty.  That means saying the difficult things instead of allowing resentment to build.  It means asking questions instead of making assumptions.

It means admitting when you're wrong.  And it means being willing to apologize when you've hurt someone.

Communication isn't always comfortable.

Some of the most important conversations you'll ever have are the ones you'd rather avoid.  But avoiding them doesn't make the problem disappear.  It usually makes it bigger.

One thing I've learned is that communication is less about finding the perfect words and more about creating a safe place where both people feel heard.  Where neither person is afraid to speak.  Where both people can be vulnerable without worrying they'll be dismissed, interrupted, or ridiculed.

Because when one person always talks and the other person slowly stops speaking...

That's no longer communication.

That's a monologue.

Real communication is an exchange.  It's two people sharing.  Two people listening.  Two people learning.  Two people growing.

It goes both ways.

And when both people genuinely communicate—not just with their mouths, but with their ears and their hearts—relationships become stronger because both people know one simple truth:

"My voice matters here."

In my opinion, that's one of the greatest gifts you can give another person.
